Martin Velíšek

* 1968

Yet Martin Velíšek’s production has nothing in common with photography. It is a deeply pictorial adventure, despite the viewer’s hesitation in front of Willem Kalf’s lemons covered with Velíšek’s mould. His performance virtuosity of painting achieves the earlier mentioned flawlessness of photography, but in its own way, it confirms the sovereignty of painting. But the artist’s work often refers to a bigger complex based on a concept which is even greater than painting as such – from interactive solitary picture citations over text works to complex three-dimensional installations using other means of expression (sound, light etc.) Used means of expression serve the author in seeking pictures which have nothing in common with the stream of visual information fired off to us nowadays by the mass media. He explores again the genres of still life, landscape or portrait to retell stories full of smiles. He prolongs the history of old paintings of his favourite Flemish masters to show off their beauty and alongside he tries to argue against perfection, which cannot be flawless, for flawlessness is always the devil’s prey. But we must not settle for looking at Velíšek’s paintings, we have to think about them and search in them. His art is the art of St Thomas, who wants to see with his own eyes to believe and who has to look in a different way because he wants to believe. In this way, he learns to see what reason refuses to believe.
